Small Group Collaborative Competition
New teachers will break-up into small collaborative teams and engage in problem-solving scenarios that relate to the top three needs of new teachers at Lexington High School; and the top three areas of need are the following: (1) classroom management, (2) relations with parents, and (3) student motivation.
We will provide strategies and techniques that adhere to best practice standards, learner-centered principles and Marzano’s nine instructional strategies. The new teachers will be permitted time to enhance their problem-solving solutions to the proposed scenarios.
In conclusion, mentors will guide each new teacher to develop competent and professional plans to proactively address the top three areas of need.

Description of the Activity
New teachers team up with similar grade level certifications
They will be prompted with scenarios that include the following:
Student motivation
Classroom management
Relations with parents
Each small group will craft a solution to each scenario
Facilitator will present proven strategies and techniques that adhere to best practice standards, learner-centered principles and Marzano’s nine instructional strategies
After presentation, each small group will enhance their crafted solutions and then present to the group
To conclude, mentor guidance and support will be provided to each new teacher to finalize the proactive approach to the top three areas of instructional need.

12:30 – 12:35 Introduction to activity and creation of teams
12:35 – 12:55 Scenarios are proposed that relate to the following: (1) Classroom management, (2) student motivation, and (3) relations with parents.
12:55 – 1:25 Small group collaborative effort to craft solutions to the three scenarios
1:25 – 1:35 Present proven strategies and techniques
1:35 – 1:45 Brief presentation of solutions to the whole group
1:45 – 1:55 Mentor guidance to create pro-active plan to address the three areas of need
1:55 – 2:00 Conclusion
